Foot Pain

Flat Feet

Most people have a gap under the arch of their feet when they are standing. The arch, the inner part of the foot, is slightly raised off the ground. Plantar Arch performs the dual functions of weight-bearing and shock absorption.

Symptoms

  • No or very low arch
  • Over-pronation during standing or walking (feet pointing outward)

Causes

  • Genetic factors
  • Weak Arches
  • Foot or ankle injury

Solutions

  • Extra width fitting shoes
  • Orthotics devices such as custom-made insoles which will relieve pressure from the arch and reduce pain if the feet rolls inwards too much
  • Don’t bear with the pain, let our friendly consultant help you to do a detailed analysis to help you solve your foot pain

Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia is a condition in which the ball of your foot becomes painful and inflamed due to overintense physical activities like running and jumping.

Symptoms

  • Sharp burning at the ball of the feet
  • A feeling of a pebble in the bottom of the leg
  • Pain worsens when running or walking

Causes

  • Intense training or physical activities
  • Certain foot shapes like high arch feet will put extra pressure on metatarsals
  • Poorly fitted shoes such as high heels will put extra weight on the front of the leg
  • Excess weights

Solutions

  • Avoid to-tight or too-loose, limit your wearing of high heels and wear shoes appropriate to the sports you play
  • Do not over-exercise or expose to intense activities and more rest
  • Orthotics devices such as custom-made inserts to provide stability and cushioning to the foot

High Arch Feet

Most people have a gap under the arch of their feet when they are standing. The arch, the inner part of the foot, is slightly raised off the ground. Plantar Arch performs the dual functions of weight-bearing and shock absorption. People with a high arch have too much weight concentrated on the ball and heel of your foot. That improper weight distribution leads to poor shock absorption and significant arch pain.

Symptoms

  • High arch
  • Usual pain at behind or inside of ankle bone
  • Hammertoes
  • Pain gets worse during walking or running

Causes

  • Inherited genetic factors
  • Neurologic disorder or other medical condition, such as cerebral palsy

Solutions

  • High topped shoes to support the ankle and shoes with a little wider heels on the bottom to add stability
  • Orthotics devices such as custom-made inserts to provide stability and cushioning to the foot

Morton’s Neuroma

Neuroma is a growth that arises in a nerve cell. It is a benign tumour. A Morton’s neuroma is a swollen, inflamed nerve located between the bones at the ball of the foot. Morton’s neuroma is a painful condition that affects the ball of your foot, most commonly the area between your third and fourth toes.

Symptoms

  • A feeling as if you’re standing on a pebble in your shoe
  • A burning pain in the ball of your foot that may radiate into your shoes
  • Numbness in your toes

Causes

  • Wearing high-heeled shoes or shoes that are tight or ill-fitting can place extra pressure on your toes and the ball of your foot
  • Sports that feature tight shoes such as snow skiing or rock climbing can put pressure on your toes
  • High arches or flatfeet are at higher risk of developing Morton’s Neuroma

Solutions

  • Avoid high heels or tight shoes and choose shoes with broad toe box and extra depth
  • Orthotic devices

Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is a long, thin ligament that lies directly beneath the skin on the bottom of the foot. The plantar fascia acts like a shock-absorbing bowstring, supporting the arch in your foot. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the ligament which commonly causes stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As you get up and move more, the pain normally decreases, but it might return after long periods of standing or after rising from sitting.

Symptoms

  • Stabbing pain at the bottom of the foot near the heel
  • Pain is usually the most during the first few steps of awakening or long period of standing

Causes

  • Tension and stress on the bowstring plantar fascia becomes too great and causes a small tear
  • Repetitive stretching and tearing can cause the fascia to become irritated and inflamed

Solutions

  • Medication pain relievers can ease the pain and inflammation
  • Orthotics devices such as custom-fitted arch support can help to distribute pressure to the feet more evenly
  • Physiotherapy to strengthen lower leg muscle thus stabilising ankle and heel

Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon attaches your calf muscles to your heel bone. Achilles tendinitis is an overuse injury of the Achilles tendon through intense physical activities such as running or jumping.

Symptoms

  • Discomfort or swelling in the back of your heel
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Limited range of motion when flexing your foot

Causes

  • Wearing old or poorly fitting shoes
  • Wearing high heels daily or for prolonged durations
  • Exercising without a proper warmup
  • Straining the calf muscles during repeated exercise or physical activity

Solutions

  • Wearing orthotics shoes with a built-up heel to take tension off your Achilles tendon
  • Very gently stretching and later strengthening your calf muscle
  • Physical therapy

Corns/Calluses

Corns and calluses are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop when your skin tries to protect itself against friction and pressure. Corns usually occur at pressure points typically bottom of the feet and side of the toes.

Symptoms

  • Calluses: A patch of compact, dead skin anywhere on the body that is subjected to friction
  • Corns: A compact patch of hard skin with a dense core, located on the top of the toe or the outside of the little toe

Causes

  • Ill-fitting shoes especially high heels shoes as they put pressure on the toes
  • Running shoes without socks which causes rubbing or pressure

Solutions

  • Shoe selections: They should have a wide toe box, no pointy toes, and there should be space between the tip of the longest toes and the end of the shoe
  • Wear shoes with socks to reduce rubbing
  • Insoles customised to your feet

Hammer Toes

A hammertoe is a deformity that causes your toe to bend or curl downward instead of pointing forward. It may also occur due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. This deformity can affect any toe on your foot.

Symptoms

  • An abnormal bend in the joints of one or more of your toes
  • Moving affected toes may be very painful

Causes

  • High-heeled shoes or footwear that’s too tight in the toe box can crowd your toes into a space in which it can’t lie flat
  • Abnormal balance of the toe muscle
  • An injury in which you stub, jam or break a toe can make it more likely for that digit to develop hammertoe

Solutions

  • Avoid shoes with pointed toes
  • Avoiding high heels will help you avoid back problems
  • Wearing laced or strapped shoes which are roomier and adjustable

Heel Spur

A heel spur is a foot condition with a calcium deposit causing a bony protrusion on the underside of the heel bone. Therefore, Heel Spurs often start in the front of the hell and eventually affect other parts of the foot.

Symptoms

  • The pain usually occurs during standing
  • Most pronounced at the rear of the foot

Causes

  • Cause by stains on foot muscles and ligaments, repeated tearing the membrane that covers the heel bones
  • People with flat feet (over-pronation) or high arches have higher risk of having heel spurs

Solutions

  • Orthotic devices with rear support are used to take the pressure off plantar spurs and reduce stress
  • Shoe recommendations
  • Physical therapy
  • Infrequently, surgery is performed on chronically inflamed spurs

Bunions

A bunion is a deformity of the base joint of big toe with a bony bump forming on the joint at the base of your big toe. It forms when your big toe pushes against your next toe, forcing the joint of your big toe to get bigger and stick out. The skin over the bunion might be red and sore. The deformity may cause the foot to rub on shoes, which may cause inflammation and pain.

Symptoms

  • A bulging bump on the outside of the base of your big toes
  • Swelling or soreness around your big toe joint
  • Persistent or intermittent pain

Causes

  • Shoes that are too tight, too narrow or too pointed are more susceptible to bunions
  • Inherited structural foot defect may increase the formation of bunions

Solutions

  • Shoe selections: They should have a wide toe box, no pointy toes, and there should be space in between the tip of your longest toe at the end of the shoe
  • Your shoes should conform to the shape of your feet without squeezing or pressing any part of your foot
